Each game has pursued a different angle, from combat controls to enemy design to HVT frequency to crafting. That's not to say that they're objectively better, it's just to point out that they're making refinements to particularly stagnant parts of the MH formula. It feels like modern game design knowledge has been applied to the genre, while many of MH's designs remain archaic. In my opinion, the hunting games on Vita are doing their controls and mechanical design with more consistency than MH. It's still an overly complex mess of mechanics that, to anyone who hasn't been playing for the last 10+ years, fell unnecessary at best and obscurely convoluted at worst. They might be refining each release, but they're doing practically nothing to get "new blood" into the game. That's the type of stuff I'm talking about. They even use different buttons for some of the same actions. Even so, there are 3 different ranged weapons with 3 fundamentally different methods of aiming, firing, and reloading. I also agree that they did a lot to improve the mechanics. I don't disagree that MH4U is the best MH ever. TL DR: Why aren't you playing Toukiden right now? You also retain your experience, so you can keep your level, your mitama upgrades, and your gear upgrades. If you beat various parts of it, you can earn gear and upgrade materials for use in the main game. There's tons of new armor, new oni, new missions, so on and so on. Three new weapon types are included, which is like saying there are three totally new character classes coming out. Toukiden: Kiwami comes out on Tuesday and it essentially doubles the size of the game. I could never get into MonHunFU but I love Toukiden. The game is often compared to Monster Hunter, and rightfully so given its similar gameplay loop, but personally I found I enjoyed it much more than, say, Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite. The secondary benefit here is that it also limits the game's grind, putting rare upgrade materials behind a skill wall instead of a time-grind wall. This gives you valuable upgrade materials and limits the oni's ability to ruin your day. You sever limbs and have to make tough combat decisions to purify them (you have to stand still to purify, sacrificing a window of opportunity to do bonus damage and also exposing yourself to attack). ![]() Beyond that, you also equip mitama, the souls of fallen warriors that you rescue throughout the game, to grant yourself a unique set of spells to further supplement your loadout.ĭuring combat, oni all of destructible limbs. The different weapon types all of meaningful diversity, resulting in totally different play styles between, say, the longsword and the bow. You gradually unlock more difficult missions, better armor, and so on.Īll of this is very well done. The gameplay loop is one of selecting the gear you want, choosing a mission, gathering a party of either friends or NPCs, and then going out to fight stuff. Toukiden: Age of Demons is a game for the PSP and PS Vita where you play as a samurai and you hunt oni.
